He was the Keats House poet in residence in 2012 and was part of a recent Arts Council England funded project called Putting You in the Picture\, which encouraged children to respond to art on display in galleries. \n\n\n\nWe are enormously excited to welcome him as our headline act on the final Sunday of the 2025 Hastings Book Festival\, when he’ll bring the festival to a close with a fabulously funny\, thought provoking and heart warming show.

SUMMARY:Hastings Book Festival - A walk on the wild side: how we got into a life of crime
DESCRIPTION:Adam Macqueen and William Shaw are journalists who have taken up writing crime fiction\, producing popular and successful novels that have developed large and loyal audiences. St Leonards resident Adam’s latest novel in his Tommy Wildblood series\, The Inalienable Right\, was released earlier this year\, and Brighton based William Shaw’s latest novel The Red Shore was published in July. His earlier book The Wild Swimmers was based in Dungeness. Both writers will take to the OB stage to talk about what got them started\, their influences and will be reading from their work in this thrilling Sunday afternoon session. \n\n\n\nExpect thrills galore as two journalists turned thriller writers talk about their route into crime.

SUMMARY:Hastings Book Festival - Who is John Blanke?
DESCRIPTION:Hastings Book Festival is delighted to welcome Michael Ohajura\, the Project Director of the John Blanke Project\, a contemporary archive celebrating John Blanke\, the black trumpeter to the court of Henry VII and Henry VIII now in the National Portrait Gallery and the first known person of African descent in British history for whom we have an image and documented record. \n\n\n\nDr Ohajura will be introducing the work of the project\, which explores how one man’s presence challenges and enriches our understanding of Tudor England\, race and representation\, offering a powerful platform for dialogue across art\, history and identity. It also reflects on how brief\, incomplete biographies like Blanke’s can inspire historians and artists to reimagine overlooked lives and connect them to our own\, completing the circle that makes history real\, relevant and resonant today.

SUMMARY:Hastings Book Festival - Journey to The Chosen Queen
DESCRIPTION:Sam Davey is the founder of the Hastings Literature Festival\, the precursor to our current Book Festival\, and the author of an acclaimed new novel\, The Chosen Queen\, which shows the story of Camelot begins not with the sword in the stone\, but rather with a twisted chain of murder\, magic and deceit in a powerful feminist retelling featuring Igraine\, the destined mother of King Arthur.  \n\n\n\nSam will be talking about her personal journey from starting a book event on the coast to publishing a work of fiction herself\, and will be reading from her book and taking questions from the audience. \n\n\n\nExpect a Sunday matinee of the highest quality.

SUMMARY:Hastings Book Festival - Who Killed Private Life?
DESCRIPTION:We live in an age of unprecedented exposure. Reality TV cameras follow strangers into their bedrooms and breakups. Royals and celebrities bare their souls on podcasts\, and teenagers document every detail of their lives on TikTok.  \n\n\n\nToday\, privacy is not just rare\, it is often seen as suspicious. But how did we get here? And what\, exactly\, are we losing? \n\n\n\nIn her provocative new book\, Strangers and Intimates: The Rise and Fall of Private Life\, cultural historian Dr. Tiffany Jenkins argues that our crisis of privacy runs far deeper than social media or surveillance capitalism. Drawing a sweeping narrative from ancient civilizations to today’s hyperconnected world\, Dr Jenkins reveals the surprising history of private life; how it was once feared and how it slowly emerged as a cornerstone of human freedom and intimacy. \n\n\n\nNow\, she argues\, that hard-won private realm is under threat. And not just from Big Tech. Long before algorithms and smartphones\, the foundations were already being chipped away. Join us for a compelling conversation about how private life was created\, why it matters\, and what we risk losing as it disappears.  \n\n\n\nDr. Tiffany Jenkins is a writer\, cultural historian\, and trustee of the British Museum. She has presented several BBC Radio 4 series\, including A History of Secrecy\, and is the author of Keeping Their Marbles. \n\n\n\nDr Jenkins will be interviewed by local author\, journalist and campaigner\, Tessa Boase.
