SUMMARY:Michael Rosen
DESCRIPTION:The incomparable Michael Rosen is opening our 2024 festival with a talk based on his new book – Rosen’s Almanac. \n\n\n\n\nWe are delighted that the celebrated writer\, Michael Rosen\, is joining us to talk about his new book\, Rosen’s Almanac (published Sept 5th). Michael has written on many subjects\, but this book is particularly appropriate for our festival as it’s a celebration of the English language itself. \n\n\n\nThe book is described as “a joyful journey through a year of weird words and fantastic phrases” and “a delightful book for anyone who loves language – whether following its rules or breaking them!” \n\n\n\nThe session will last approximately one hour and will be followed by a book signing. \n\n\n\nFor tickets and full line up please click here.

SUMMARY:OBX Connects: Technology as a tool for resistance in the UK's immigration system
DESCRIPTION:July’s OBX Connects is about how technology can be as a tool for upliftment\, resistance and resilience. \n\n\n\nTickets: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/technology-as-a-tool-for-resistance-in-the-uks-immigration-system-tickets-896214149647 \n\n\n\nFounder and CEO Rossana Leal : Refugee Buddy Project \n\n\n\nWe will hear from the Refugee Buddy Project\, a refugee and migrant-led charity based in Hastings supporting people from refugee backgrounds with a buddy programme\, advocacy\, and financial and emotional support. The Refugee Buddy Project leads on Refugee Week in Hastings. Founder and CEO Rossana Leal will talk about the important work of the project and also about the campaign against immigration detention centres and in particular centres like Northeye in Bexhill\, an ex-prison site\, where the Home Office is proposing to set up a 1200 bed centre. This would be the largest detention centre in the UK. \n\n\n\nEvery year 28\,000 people are held in immigration detention\, while they wait to find out if they will be deported from the UK. These are prison-like places\, where people are detained for administrative purposes\, they have not been found guilty of a crime and they don’t know how long they will be there for. The UK is the only country in the UK which practises indefinite detention. \n\n\n\nLamin Joof: a musician\, a chef and a trustee at Hear Me Out \n\n\n\nLamin Joof is a musician\, a chef and a trustee at music charity Hear Me Out. Hear Me Out runs music workshops\, gigs and radio stations in immigration detention centres and runs bands on the ‘outside’ platforming musicians who met whilst they were in detention and tracks written in detention centres. SUMMARY:America Ground: The Musical
DESCRIPTION:Hastings based playwright John Knowles and musician Bob Tipler have created a play with songs\, very loosely based on the history of the America Ground area of Hastings. The America Ground was an area of shingle beach that was settled on in the late 18th and 19th Century with its residents paying no rent as the land apparently had no owners. \n\n\n\nThe play is actually an allegory concerning today’s housing crisis and issues of land ownership which has a particular relevance to Hastings and many seaside towns today. With the huge rise in house and rent prices\, the surge in second homes and holiday lets over the last few years\, secure accommodation is a real issue for many people. \n\n\n\nWith thanks to funding from Historic England and Arts Council England. \n\n\n\nPlease purchase tickets from: https://ticketpass.org/event/EXJRTH/america-ground-the-musical

SUMMARY:OBX Connects: May - Luciana Haill
DESCRIPTION:May’s OBX Connects features Luciana Haill whose work intersects new technology\, neuroscience and the unconscious to make mental processes visible (in particular – lucid dreams\, meditation and nostalgia). She creates interdisciplinary artworks combining augmented reality\, heritage\, live streaming and performance. \n\n\n\nLuciana experienced viral meningitis as a teenager which led to a fascination with the brain\, and her brainwave artworks have been described as a form of ‘ephemeral portraiture’ made through monitoring the brainwave EEG signal. \n\n\n\nApparitions (AR) artworks explore urgent contemporary themes around innovation\, gentrification\, hubris and technology elitism through a reflection on local heritage and Victorian engineering using smartphones and free 3D scanning software. \n\n\n\nHer work has happened internationally at venues including Waag Society (Netherlands)\, Kibla (Slovenia)\, FACT (UK) and SPILL Festival (UK). \n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Guido Mencari \n\n\n\nAbout OBX Connects \n\n\n\nOBX Connects is a series of monthly talks and meet-ups for people working with creative technology. The talks are free\, and open to everyone. If you are an artist\, maker\, technologist\, engineer\, dancer\, musician\, activist or just curious about what we do\, come along to find out more! \n\n\n\nThere’ll be a pop-up bar open from 6:30 for you to buy drinks\, and the talk will start at 6:45. During the evening there will be an opportunity for you to share your ideas with the community\, call out for collaborators\, or perhaps plan ways to move your project forward. \n\n\n\nAdmission is FREE!
