Refugee Week is the world’s largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions\, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. \n\n\n\nRossana Leal : Founder and CEO Rossana Leal : Refugee Buddy Project: \n\n\n\nWe will hear from the Refugee Buddy Project\, a refugee and migrant-led charity based in Hastings supporting people from refugee backgrounds with a buddy programme\, advocacy\, and financial and emotional support. The Refugee Buddy Project leads on Refugee Week in Hastings. Founder and CEO Rossana Leal will talk about the important work of the project and also about the campaign against immigration detention centres and in particular centres like Northeye in Bexhill\, an ex-prison site\, where the Home Office is proposing to set up a 1200 bed centre. This would be the largest detention centre in the UK. \n\n\n\nEvery year 28\,000 people are held in immigration detention\, while they wait to find out if they will be deported from the UK. These are prison-like places\, where people are detained for administrative purposes\, they have not been found guilty of a crime and they don’t know how long they will be there for. The UK is the only country in the UK which practises indefinite detention. \n\n\n\nLamin Joof: a musician\, a chef and a trustee: Hear Me Out: \n\n\n\nLamin Joof is a musician\, a chef and a trustee at music charity Hear Me Out. Hear Me Out runs music workshops\, gigs and radio stations in immigration detention centres and runs bands on the ‘outside’ platforming musicians who met whilst they were in detention and tracks written in detention centres. Lamin has been incarcerated in 3 immigration detention centres in the UK\, which is where he met Hear Me Out. He is now lead singer of the Hear Me Out band. Lamin will speak about his experiences in immigration detention\, and about how music technologies helped him to cope. DESCRIPTION:May’s OBX Connects features Luciana Haill whose work intersects new technology\, neuroscience and the unconscious to make mental processes visible (in particular – lucid dreams\, meditation and nostalgia). She creates interdisciplinary artworks combining augmented reality\, heritage\, live streaming and performance. \n\n\n\nLuciana experienced viral meningitis as a teenager which led to a fascination with the brain\, and her brainwave artworks have been described as a form of ‘ephemeral portraiture’ made through monitoring the brainwave EEG signal. \n\n\n\nApparitions (AR) artworks explore urgent contemporary themes around innovation\, gentrification\, hubris and technology elitism through a reflection on local heritage and Victorian engineering using smartphones and free 3D scanning software. \n\n\n\nHer work has happened internationally at venues including Waag Society (Netherlands)\, Kibla (Slovenia)\, FACT (UK) and SPILL Festival (UK). \n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Guido Mencari \n\n\n\nAbout OBX Connects \n\n\n\nOBX Connects is a series of monthly talks and meet-ups for people working with creative technology. DESCRIPTION:The Funny Hole is a weekend exhibition of artworks by four distinctive artists – Jane Dinmore\, Boogaloo Stu\, Ladypat and John Lee Bird. Plus\, the launch of our forthcoming Observer Building publication Back From The Brink – The Observer Building: its rise\, fall and rescue. \n\n\n\nAfternoon: \n\n\n\nDrop-in between 3pm – 5.30pm to view and take part in a range of interactive activities and exhibitions. \n\n\n\nThe drop-in is suitable for families. \n\n\n\nTours: \n\n\n\nTours of the building will be available to book during the afternoon session. Please sign up when you arrive (between 3pm and 4.30pm). Tours will start at 4pm\, 5.15pm and 5.30pm. Please note that due to capacity this is on a first come first served basis. \n\n\n\nEvening Event: \n\n\n\nDoors will open at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start. DESCRIPTION:Setting Up Local Currencies in Hastings \n\n\n\nMarch’s OBX Connects is about the tools we need for community wealth building and currencies\, thinking how this can work in practice for Hastings. \n\n\n\nArtist and activist\, Ruth Catlow will be demystifying blockchains and explaining why blockchains might be useful for community wealth building and DAOs (decentralised autonomous organisations\, bottom-up structures which have no central authority). She will also talk about why crypto-currencies have a terrible reputation and outline potential mitigators to these problems. \n\n\n\nSherry Clark will talk about the value of time-banks\, how they work and why they are important\, based on three local initiatives where time-credits are being used to recognise and sustain contributions to the common good: Tidy Up St Leonards\, Gardening Our Streets and the new Learning to Grow alliance. \n\n\n\nCam Smith will talk about a thought revolution blossoming from mycology (the study of fungi)\, inspiring his Sylvan Roots Mentorship Programme .
