SUMMARY:Hastings Book Festival - Who is John Blanke?
DESCRIPTION:Hastings Book Festival is delighted to welcome Michael Ohajura\, the Project Director of the John Blanke Project\, a contemporary archive celebrating John Blanke\, the black trumpeter to the court of Henry VII and Henry VIII now in the National Portrait Gallery and the first known person of African descent in British history for whom we have an image and documented record. \n\n\n\nDr Ohajura will be introducing the work of the project\, which explores how one man’s presence challenges and enriches our understanding of Tudor England\, race and representation\, offering a powerful platform for dialogue across art\, history and identity. It also reflects on how brief\, incomplete biographies like Blanke’s can inspire historians and artists to reimagine overlooked lives and connect them to our own\, completing the circle that makes history real\, relevant and resonant today.

SUMMARY:Hastings Book Festival - Who Killed Private Life?
DESCRIPTION:We live in an age of unprecedented exposure. Reality TV cameras follow strangers into their bedrooms and breakups. Royals and celebrities bare their souls on podcasts\, and teenagers document every detail of their lives on TikTok.  \n\n\n\nToday\, privacy is not just rare\, it is often seen as suspicious. But how did we get here? And what\, exactly\, are we losing? \n\n\n\nIn her provocative new book\, Strangers and Intimates: The Rise and Fall of Private Life\, cultural historian Dr. Tiffany Jenkins argues that our crisis of privacy runs far deeper than social media or surveillance capitalism. Drawing a sweeping narrative from ancient civilizations to today’s hyperconnected world\, Dr Jenkins reveals the surprising history of private life; how it was once feared and how it slowly emerged as a cornerstone of human freedom and intimacy. \n\n\n\nNow\, she argues\, that hard-won private realm is under threat. And not just from Big Tech. Long before algorithms and smartphones\, the foundations were already being chipped away. Join us for a compelling conversation about how private life was created\, why it matters\, and what we risk losing as it disappears.  \n\n\n\nDr. Tiffany Jenkins is a writer\, cultural historian\, and trustee of the British Museum. She has presented several BBC Radio 4 series\, including A History of Secrecy\, and is the author of Keeping Their Marbles. \n\n\n\nDr Jenkins will be interviewed by local author\, journalist and campaigner\, Tessa Boase.

SUMMARY:Hasting Book Festival Workshop - Kiss like two fish: the art of the short story
DESCRIPTION:This dynamic three-hour workshop led by James Young will explore the craft and wonder of short story writing. Through lively discussion\, writing exercises designed to challenge and inspire\, and the close reading of exciting\, innovative example stories\, the workshop will examine how elements such as voice\, openings and endings\, ellipticism and ambiguity can create a kind of magic that makes us\, as George Saunders has said\, ‘a little more aware and a little more in love with the world’.

SUMMARY:Stink or Swim workshop
DESCRIPTION:Wondering if it’s a good day to take a dip in the sea? Is it time to stink or swim?! \n\n\n\nJoin OBX for a day-long collaborative community workshop to make sculptures that move according to the sea pollution levels. These playful automata models will use sea quality data to help you know if it’s swimming day or not and are a community-driven response to the sewage dumping crisis. Think weather houses\, but with data! \n\n\n\nWhether you’re passionate about coding and electronics or you love crafting and collage\, this workshop is for everyone! All you need is your creativity and a willingness to collaborate. OBX staff will be on hand to help you realise your ideas. \n\n\n\nThe Stink or Swim?! workshop will be run by OBX (Hastings Commons’ tech-hub) in partnership with local community tech company Thingitude. \n\n\n\nMore event info and to book tickets\, please go to Eventbrite.
